Resonon Staff Profiles

Dr. Rand Swanson: President, Founder
PhD Physics: Montana State University
BA Physics: Carleton College

As co-founder and president of Resonon, Rand is responsible for establishing strategic partnerships and optical design for sensor instrumentation. Prior to co-founding Resonon, Rand's industry experience included serving as president for AdvR Inc. and as a scientist for Ophir Corp. The scope of emphasis with these companies included: LIDAR applications, Raman frequency conversion, spectroscopy techniques, optical waveguides, and machine vision systems.

Dr. Michael Kehoe: Treasurer, Founder
PhD Economics: University of Virginia
MA Accounting: University of Montana
BA Physics: University of Virginia

Mike is a co-founder of Resonon and is responsible for financial operations and optical design. Prior to co-founding Resonon, he was the business manager for another optical research company (AdvR Inc.). Mike's professional experience includes financial research at the University of Virginia and teaching in accounting and finance at the University of Montana.

Casey Smith: Research Scientist, Founder
MS Media Arts & Sciences: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
BS Physics: Montana State University

Casey is also a co-founder of Resonon and is responsible for research and development. Casey has flown on NASA's KC-135 while testing a vibration-damping apparatus he helped design and was involved in the development of a wind-speed detecting LIDAR system at NASA Goddard. While at the MIT Media Lab, Casey worked on the development of a computational construction kit for personal fabrication. His main responsibility at Resonon is the research and development of imaging spectrometer instrumentation.

Dr. Tom Moon: Research Scientist
PhD Geophysics: University of Washington
BS Physics: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Dr. Moon taught at Whitman College, Norwich University, and Montana Tech of the University of Montana, where he served as department head. Tom's research has been largely devoted to remote sensing applications and technology, including digital image processing, wavelet transforms, and hyperspectral imaging systems.  He has been funded by NASA, NSF, DoD, and DoE.

Timothy Hirzel: Software Engineer
MS Media Arts & Sciences: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
BS Computer Science: Harvard University

At MIT, Tim constructed a system to make visualizations from long term recordings of a person's heart rate. He specializes in C and Python as well as open source operating systems and embedded computers. Tim is leading the development of Resonon's hyperspectral data analysis software package.

Casey Dodge: Mechanical Engineer
BS Mechanical Engineering: Montana State University

Casey has designed and built cryogenic, laser, and fiber optics components for use in spectroscopy research. He has also worked on the Multi-Order Solar EUV Spectrograph (MOSES) sounding rocket project at MSU. His interests and abilities include 3D modeling, mechanical design, and high precision machining.

Diane Ferris: Administration
BS Microbiology: Montana State University
AS Business Administration: Montana State University Northern

Previous to joining Resonon, Diane was a CEO for a nonprofit multi-line insurance company. She handles contract administration, bookkeeping, and payroll.
